On 19 April, The Simpson family made their debut in a series of (eat my) shorts on the Tracey Ullman Show. This was also the year that saw the creation of two of British television's most memorable characters: unscrupulous Tory backbench MP Alan B'Stard played by Rik Mayall in The New Statesman, and the grumpy Inspector Morse played by John Thaw in the eponymous drama series. For people called Lewis, life would never be the same again...
