The Price of Everything

Looking for the value of the choices we make in life, plus some tips for directors and entrepreneurs

The Price of Everything, by Eduardo Porter
£11.99 WILLIAM HEINEMANN

There was a time when economics was a job for bearded bean-counters who smoked pipes and wore sandals. But no more. Following the success of books such as Freakonomics and our own Tim Harford's The Undercover Economist, the so-called "dismal science" has suddenly become very fashionable — and very popular. Freakonomics and its successor, Superfreakonomics, have sold more than five million copies worldwide.

The latest author to mine this potentially lucrative mother lode is New York Times journalist Eduardo Porter. His theme, as the title of his book suggests, is the value we assign to the choices we make in our lives: whether we're deciding to buy a cheeseburger, going to church or putting together health care reforms, everything has its price. The problem is, we're often confused about what that price should be. As he points out, "People will travel across town to save $20 off a $100 sweater, but not to save $20 off a $1,000 computer."

The success or otherwise of these books depends on discovering unlikely connections and making the most of counterintuitive thinking. Although Porter's writing style can verge on the rambling at times, he certainly delivers, whether he's talking about the burger menu at McDonald's or the tipping habits of Americans versus Europeans. Good stuff. 9/10
