What the Dog Saw and Other Adventures, by Malcolm Gladwell
£9.99 PENGUINM
Malcolm Gladwell shot to fame at the beginning of the decade with his worldwide bestseller, The Tipping Point. A staff writer at the New Yorker, he struck literary gold with his examination of how small-scale social events can have huge potential implications, whether that's a rise in the sales of Hush Puppies or a drop in the New York City crime rate.

He's followed up that initial success with further works in the pop sociology/psychology vein: Blink, which looked at the human subconscious, and Outliers, which showed how environment and motivation figure in personal success. Time has named him one of its 100 most influential people and no doubt his bank manager now considers him one of his favourite customers.

Gladwell's latest book, published this month in paperback, is less thematic than its predecessors: it's a collection of the author's favourite New Yorker articles (is that the sound of the bottom of a barrel being scraped by any chance?).

Nevertheless, Gladwell fans will find much here to enjoy and the breadth and variety of subject matter is truly impressive, from the inventors of automatic vegetable choppers to the collapse of Enron.

The Leader Who Had No Title, by Robin Sharma
£9.99 SIMON & SCHUSTER
Leaderhip guru Sharma has written almost a shelf full of bestsellers, including The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari, and here comes his latest. (If you're allergic to business books written as ‘fables', stop reading now.) It tells the story of Blake Davis and his mentor Tommy Flinn and the four teachers who transform Blake's life. If you can make it through the cheesy writing style, you'll find much of use here on the art of leading, no matter what your current position is. Sharma really knows his stuff. 7/10

The Match King, by Frank Partnoy
£8.99 PROFILE BOOKS
A true story of the way greed can bring the financial system crashing down — but a story that happened nearly a century ago. Former derivatives trader Frank Partnoy tells the remarkable story of Swedish émigré Ivar Kreuger, who made his fortune loaning American money to Europe during the Great Depression in exchange for monopolies on the production and sale of matches. The parallels with the more recent financial crisis are writ large in this highly readable and entertaining book. 8/10

The Economist Guide to the European Union, by Dick Leonard
£20 PROFILE BOOKS
Here it is — everything you've always wanted to know about the European Union but were afraid to ask. Yes, if you've been worrying about the harmonisation of indirect tax rates across the member states, this is the book for you. On a more serious note, this comprehensive guide manages to put the lie to a fair amount of received wisdom (the EU is by no means the massive bureaucracy some claim) and is essential reading for Europhiles and Europhobes alike.
