This is the biggest hair salon in Europe and it gets pretty hectic. It’s also the only salon in the world to keep all the colouring up top and the styling below. As soon as you come in the front door, all you see is colour, and normally it’s the other way round. It creates a different atmosphere.
I keep my juniors right from their first day until they start to work on the floor. Saskiia needs to know my clients inside out. I’m training her up to be like my hard drive and to keep me organised and on time. I have to have a good rapport with my juniors and Saskiia is actually quite bossy with me, but that’s how I like it. She’s already started doing my clients when I’m away, but she has to promise not to pinch them! I can’t do without her.
I was awarded an OBE in 2006, which at the time was the highest award given to any hairdresser by Buckingham Palace. I found the whole day extremely emotional and felt so proud to be British. I think the Royal Family does a fantastic job. We did Diana’s hair for the last ten years of her life — she always used to tell me off for being so brown. She was something very special, a breath of fresh air.
This award was given to me for my work on the film A Clockwork Orange. There’s a scene in a coffee bar with china tables in the form of nude ladies and I produced the hair colour for the hairy bits on the tables! At the time I was the only person doing these crazy colours. The film was withdrawn in the UK and I was given the award when it was finally re-released, about 30 years after it was made.
When Twiggy was launched with thousands of highlights on her hair, not only was it the birth of Twiggy, but it was also the birth of the ‘brickwork technique’ that’s now the universal method of creating highlights. This spike comb is the perfect tool for weaving as the metal is supple — it becomes like an extension of your hand.
This Buddha was given to me the first time I ever did a seminar in Bangkok. It was an inspirational event, because I started to understand more about Buddhism. My mantra is simple: you should treat others the way you would like to be treated — you can’t have an ego.
This is my dyes chart. When I started in the 60s, no one specialised in colour. I hated cutting hair but loved colouring it. Colour can change someone completely, lift the skin and make the eyes bigger. Fashion isn’t the issue when it comes to colour: you have to work with what suits you. It’s about enhancing natural beauty.
