Unfortunately, not everyone can be the boss. But there is dignity and passion to be found at every level, even in what many of us would term mundane employment, and our hero this month loves every minute of his working day.

SpongeBob SquarePants is chief fry cook at The Krusty Krab, a grease-filled establishment at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean run by Eugene Krabs, a cash-obsessed crab with a daughter who is a sperm whale. And while SpongeBob, as a marine sponge, has almost no brains at all, he still has more than his best friend Patrick Star, a well-meaning starfish of monumental stupidity.

Many of SpongeBob's adventures in the town of Bikini Bottom revolve around his employment at the Krusty Krab, where his next-door neighbour, Squidward Tentacles, also works. Squidward is full of thwarted ambition and loathes having to work the till. SpongeBob, on the other hand, loves his work more than any other person (or sponge) in living memory. Employee of the month every month since records began, his attention to quality control when cooking a Krabby Patty burger makes Gordon Ramsay look lackadaisical.

Luckily for his employer, SpongeBob loves work for its own sake. He has enough to provide for himself and his pet snail Gary and often gives away money because he just doesn't understand the concept. In many ways, he's the perfect employee — works hard, doesn't want cash and is always happy. And, after work, he can be used to wash the car.
