It’s like finding out that Paris Hilton works for the CIA in her spare time

Volunteer workers can be the bedrock of many organisations — charities, political parties, grass roots pressure groups and the like. If your business is righting wrongs all over the world using a selection of homemade spaceships, and your head office is on a tiny island in the middle of the ocean, you need some strategically placed advocates in key markets.

Lady Penelope Creighton-Ward, 26-year-old, Roedean-educated society heiress, is just such a person. As non-salaried London agent of International Rescue, Lady Penelope is instrumental in saving the lives of countless innocents. Anonymity, and being underestimated are key to her success. To the outside world she is a rich fashion icon who gets driven around in an impossibly glamorous car. It's like finding out that Paris Hilton works for the CIA in her spare time.

A calm head in a tight spot is also a bonus. Never ruffled or over-emotional, Lady Penelope is often in danger but treats every difficult situation as if it were nothing more taxing than a trip to the spa. That sort of attitude will always wrong-foot a rival, even one like IR's nemesis The Hood, a shaven-headed maniac with the kind of eyebrows that look like a serious fire hazard.

Her loyalty is total, and that quality is something she inspires in her staff, particularly her driver, Aloysius Parker. She is also not judgemental and sees the good and useful qualities in the most unlikely people. Not many ladies of the manor would employ a former cat burglar and safecracker as their main, trusted servant. Although what Parker's thoughts are on having to drive around in a massive pink Rolls-Royce are unknown.

One thing Penny has had to sacrifice is any sort of personal life. She flirts with her widower boss Jeff Tracy, but long distance relationships between wrong-righters are notoriously difficult to establish. But that gives her all the more energy to spend on being the most glamorous female spy in history. Would you lke her to work for you? Yes, milady.
